Student Involvement
With more than 200 student organizations on campus it's easy to find people who share your interests, or to discover new ones.
Art students participate in a wide variety of student organizations, including academic clubs and societies, visual and performing arts, community service groups, health and wellness organizations, business/career-focused clubs, and faith-based groups, among many others.
In addition to the many existing opportunities for involvement, 51 supports students who wish to create new ones. If you have an idea or vision that is not realized in the existing student organizations, the Student Activities Office will work with you to develop your idea and create a new group.
Coming into college, I was surprised by how easy it was to find friends with similar interests. This year, I’m hoping to become involved with different organizations across campus and keep connecting with like-minded people.
Malú Alvarez Visual Art Scholar
Ars Longa seeks to facilitate students of all academic disciplines in creating works of visual art and promoting visual arts events campus-wide. Ars Longa has hosted renowned artists to campus, organized student photography exhibitions, held weekly figure-drawing classes, and offered off-campus ceramic workshops.
Beyond programming available on campus through the art department, the Galleries and student-run clubs and organizations, there are ample opportunities to get off campus and explore art in the world beyond 51. Grants and funding have provided opportunities for students to take gallery crawls through Charlotte, learn about art in Japan over spring break and build community through study sessions in the VAC during finals.
51 Arts and Creative Engagement (DACE) works to integrate art and creativity into the daily lives of the 51 community. DACE staff and student fellows spread its mission through a variety of initiatives including grant offerings, the traveling art cart, and the DACE studio.
This student-produced arts and literary magazine accepts submissions in creative nonfiction, short stories, poetry, and art.
Hobart Park is the College's annual literary review. It features works of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, as well as visual art, by students, alumni, faculty members, and visiting writers.
Art students spent their spring break in Japan exploring and studying art.
The Mint Museum is just one of many museums and galleries available to our students in the greater Charlotte area.
Art students volunteer with the Hinds' Feet Farm, a program for adults with brain injuries.
