Scholar Focused on Untold Stories Returns to 51¹ÙÍø

Dr. Hilary Green is returning to 51¹ÙÍø as the James B. Duke Professor of Africana Studies, a tenured position, in fall 2022.

She served as the Vann Professor of Ethics in Society during the 2020-21 school year, working with students to uncover more of 51¹ÙÍø’s history.

Green is a Civil War and Reconstruction scholar whose recent scholarship has focused on how African-Americans remembered and commemorated the Civil War and on the often-unacknowledged history and legacy of slavery on university campuses. That work  at the University of Alabama.

Her appointment fulfills the recommendation by the 51¹ÙÍø Commission on Race and Slavery to add four faculty members, housed in whole or in part in the Africana Studies Department, including a public historian.
