Occupational Health and Safety
It is the policy of 51¹ÙÍø to comply fully with the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina and with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. For this policy to be effective the college must actively assure safety awareness and compliance is proactive. 51¹ÙÍø has made the commitment to all employees that it will provide a safe and healthful working environment.
Supervisory Responsibility
Each supervisor is responsible for providing safe working conditions for each employee, knowing safety and health guidelines, reporting and investigating accidents, ensuring proper safety equipment is provided and used, and advising management of any unsafe work environment or condition.
Employee Responsibility
All employees are responsible for:
- Conducting their own work in a safe manner to protect themselves, fellow employees, and the public
- Wearing and appropriately using required safety apparel or devices
- Making recommendations to improve safety and health in the workplace
- Notifying the supervisor of any accident involving injury, illness, or "near-miss"
Responsibility for Wearing Safety Equipment
Employees and supervisors share the responsibility for the appropriate use of required safety equipment. Employees failing to wear or use required safety equipment endanger themselves and possibly other members of the faculty, staff, students, and visitors of 51¹ÙÍø. Failure to wear or use appropriate safety equipment could result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
Supervisors are also held accountable for employees who fail to utilize required equipment. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that workers perform their tasks in a safe manner which complies with safety program requirements. Supervisors who fail to require the use of specified safety equipment could also be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

Personal Protective Equipment
51¹ÙÍø, as an employer, will furnish at no cost to the employee, personal protective equipment (PPE) required by OSHA (except as described below). All existing and new employees will be issued and required to wear protective equipment as determined by the job classification assessment.
The college will purchase boots and safety glasses only once per year. If an employee wishes to buy a different style equipment than what is furnished or wishes to buy items more often than provided by 51¹ÙÍø, he or she may take advantage of the college's vendor contracts. All outside purchased personal protective equipment must meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) requirements and must be pre-approved by the employee's immediate supervisor before being used on the job.
