TRT World News: The Newsmakers - Somalia

March 1, 2016

In 2012, a new internationally-backed government was formed in Somalia, ending 20 years of political upheaval. Now, as Somalis prepare for another election, the country struggles to secure its own territory and define its political geography and direction. Professor and Chair of Political Science Ken Menkhaus contributes to a discussion about Somalia's future.

"The improved stability we have seen over the last two years is not due to a revived state or the success of the African Union peacekeepers. It's mainly due to local agreements and negotiations with paramilitary groups and local protection forces that are providing at least minimal security for Somalis to go about leading normal lives," Menkhaus said.
