East Asia Forum: Alumna Opines on Potential Global Impact of U.S. Election

August 11, 2016

Darcie Draudt '07, a doctoral candidate in political science at Johns Hopkins University, writes about how the election of Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton to the U.S. presidency might affect U.S. relations with South Korea. She notes that Trump has indicated U.S. support should be conditional on payment for support from foreign countries.

Draudt concludes, "A failure to deliver on security commitments to paying treaty allies under threat...would undermine the basic framework of treaty alliances and corrode confidence in the United States as leader or as partner."

Draudt is a James A. Kelly fellow at Pacific Forum CSIS, and director of research at Sino-NK.
