Boston Globe: Durin O’Linger ’17 Making the Most of Unexpected Chance
September 12, 2017
The Boston Globe recently profiled Durin O'Linger '17, who anchored the Wildcats pitching staff through their run to the NCAA Super Regionals in May and June.
O'Linger became a college baseball sensation as he carried the Wildcats through the A10 tournament, the regional matchup against UNC and finally the series against Texas A&M. In a 17-day stretch, O'Linger, who had his sights set on starting pharmacy school this fall, threw 502 pitches over 30 innings.
His resilience and efficiency caught the eye of the Boston Red Sox, who signed him to a deal in June. O'Linger spent the summer with the Lowell (MA) Spinners, going 4-1 in 13 appearances. He also filled in for the High A Salem team in two games.
O'Linger will spend the winter in Florida preparing for another run in the minors next season.
"Obviously, the goal is to make it all the way with the Boston Red Sox, but the big thing I did over the past two months is really enjoy where I am, because none of this was supposed to happen for me," O'Linger says.
