Jaliel King ’26 reflects on the work 51¹ÙÍø Fashion Club does to create a space for creativity, inclusion and self-expression on 51¹ÙÍø’s campus. From visits to Charlotte’s vintage markets to an annual fashion show, programming is another exciting aspect of life at 51¹ÙÍø.

About the Author

Jaliel King ’26 (he/him) is a sociology major and public health minor on the premedicine track from Bradenton, Florida.

On campus, he is involved with the Black Student Coalition (BSC), Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS), and Fashion Club.

At 51¹ÙÍø, individuality is celebrated in many ways, but few platforms allow students to express their personalities quite like the 51¹ÙÍø Fashion Club. Founded in 2021, the club has quickly become a hub of creativity, inclusion, and self-expression on campus. Our mission? To prove that self-confidence is the best outfit you can wear.

The Origins of a Stylish Movement

The club was established by Ted Pasquette ’24, who envisioned a space where fashion could be more than just clothes—it could be a form of self-empowerment. Ted started the Fashion Club during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many struggled to stay connected. Yet, he was determined to build a community where style wasn’t dictated by trends, but rather by the unique personalities of each student.

Through his passion and leadership, the club grew into a space where creativity, sustainability, and confidence were all woven together. When Ted graduated, he passed the torch to me, and I am committed to carrying the club's mission forward as current president.

A Platform for Expression and Innovation

The 51¹ÙÍø Fashion Club is unlike any other organization on campus. We believe fashion is more than just looking good; it’s about feeling good. Whether you're someone who loves high-end couture, DIY fashion, or thrift store treasures, the club is an inclusive space for you to explore your style freely.

Members of the club have the chance to learn and engage in a variety of activities, including:

  • Trips to Charlotte’s Vintage Markets: We love discovering gems at local thrift and vintage stores, and these excursions are an excellent opportunity to find inspiration and one-of-a-kind pieces. We just received funding from the Activities Tax Council which means we’ll be able to provide transportation for future trips into Charlotte!
  • Workshops and Sustainability Talks: Fashion can be environmentally friendly. We host workshops on sewing, upcycling, and modifying clothes, as well as talks from sustainable fashion brands that help us rethink the impact of our wardrobes.
  • Annual Fashion Show: Our biggest event is the campus-wide fashion show, where students get the chance to showcase their personal styles on the runway. It’s not just a show—it’s a celebration of individuality, creativity, and confidence.
  • Jewelry and Accessory Making: For students interested in crafting their own looks, we offer lessons on how to create your own jewelry and accessories, letting members add a personal touch to every outfit.

A Community That Celebrates Diversity

One of the most important aspects of the 51¹ÙÍø Fashion Club is its celebration of diversity. We embrace fashion from all cultures and backgrounds, encouraging members to showcase styles that reflect their heritage, religion, and unique perspectives. Whether it’s through traditional attire, modern streetwear, or avant-garde fashion, we welcome everyone to express themselves authentically.

The club stands as a reminder that fashion has no rules, no limitations, and no boundaries. Everyone is encouraged to step out of their comfort zones, try new styles, and most importantly, be themselves.
