Greek and Latin Placement
Ancient Greek Placement
Continue your study of Ancient Greek by contacting Keyne Cheshire at kecheshire@davidson.edu. Intermediate Greek (GRE 201) is offered during the fall semester only. Beginning Greek (GRE 103) is an intensive course offered only in the spring semester. Advanced Greek courses (numbered above 201) are offered every semester. If you have received a 6 or 7 on the higher-level International Baccalaureate Greek test, then you will receive credit for Greek 199. While we invite you to study as much Greek as you like, your completion of a Greek course numbered 201 or higher will fulfill the college's language requirement. That said, a strong background in Ancient Greek may, after consultation with and at the discretion of the coordinator, warrant credit for GRE 201 outright and thereby fulfill the language requirement.
Latin Placement
Continue your study of Latin by contacting Keyne Cheshire at kecheshire@davidson.edu after completing the Latin placement test. Depending on placement test results and your consultation with the coordinator, you may enter the Latin sequence through courses numbered 101, 102, 201, or higher. Beginning Latin (LAT 101) and Intermediate Latin (LAT 201) are offered in the fall semester only. LAT 102 (second-semester Latin) is offered only in the spring semester. Advanced Latin courses (numbered above 201) are offered every semester. If you wish to satisfy the language requirement in Latin, we strongly advise you to enroll in Latin in your first (fall) semester at 51¹ÙÍø. Please take the placement test by June 19 to be sure you receive your placement before course preferences are due.
The Latin Placement Test is deployed in a learning management system named Moodle. To start the test, please follow these steps:
- using your 51¹ÙÍø network username and password (provided in your letter from 51¹ÙÍø Office of Technology and Innovation). If you have problems logging in, please contact Technology & Innovation by emailing ti@davidson.edu.
- Then .
- For the enrollment key, enter "LATINE!" (including the exclamation point)
After completing the test, be sure to email Keyne Cheshire at kecheshire@davidson.edu. She will work to determine the most appropriate Latin course for you.
Students who have received a 4 or 5 on either or both of the Advanced Placement Latin tests, or a 6 or 7 on the higher-level International Baccalaureate Latin exam, will receive credit for Latin 199. Your completion of a Latin course numbered 201 or higher will fulfill the college's language requirement. A particularly accomplished performance on the Latin Placement Test may, after consultation with and at the discretion of the coordinator, warrant credit for LAT 201 outright and thereby fulfill the language requirement.
In addition to the Latin and Greek minors, 51¹ÙÍø students can also major and minor in Classical Languages and Literature as well as Classical Studies. These languages can also be used for these majors and minors.
