Student Opportunities
The South Asian Studies Department encourages 51¹ÙÍø students to widen their experience with opportunities outside the classroom.
Please note these language courses do not fulfill 51¹ÙÍø's language requirement.
South Asia Summer Language Institute
The South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI) offers the first and second year study of modern South Asian languages and Sanskrit, as well as the third year study of Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu. It prepares students for subsequent training domestically and abroad.
Courses include various levels (elementary, intermediate and/or advanced) of Bengali, Pashto, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Tamil, Tibetan and Urdu.
SASLI is hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For the Summer 2021 program, all courses will be offered remotely.
Student Faculty Fellows
The ASIANetwork Student-Faculty Fellows​ (SFF) program supports faculty-led student summer projects in Asia emphasizing:
- Current global issues in an Asian context
- Interaction and collaboration with the people of Asia
- Practical and professional skill development
- Student career and professional preparation
- Strong faculty mentorship of students

McJimsey Student Essay Award
ASIANetwork invites undergraduate students from member institutions to submit papers for the Marianna McJimsey Award, which recognizes undergraduate student research dealing with Asia.
The winner and one or two runners-up receive invitations and funding to present their work at the Annual Conference, and the winning paper is published in .
Fellowships are competitive awards and programs that provide funding and other resources for meaningful immersive work, like research, teaching, or service. Like scholarships, fellowships can also support academic study.
The following programs offer post-graduate opportunities in or related to South Asia. Interested candidates should contact 51¹ÙÍø’s Office of Fellowships to learn more about these fellowships and other programs.
