Internships, Careers and Graduate School
We are committed to advising students in identifying and choosing successful internship, graduate school, and career opportunities.
In addition to our faculty members, who serve as excellent resources, networking connections, and advisers, the Betty and B. Frank Matthews II ’49 Center for Career Development (Matthews Center) also provides a large number of online and in-person services to assist you in finding internships, graduate programs, and career opportunities.
Internships
Internships provide you with the opportunity to explore your interests in meaningful ways through real-word applications. You can participate in internships during the academic year and/or over the summer, domestically and/or abroad. History majors have recently interned at the White House Press Office, the Heritage Foundation, the Spoleto Music Festival in Charleston, and the National Women's History Foundation; they have had internships in information technology at Price Waterhouse Cooper, low-income support at LIFT Philadelphia, and tax analysis at the American Enterprise Institute.
Faculty members regularly assist students in identifying internships, as do the Career Services staff members. You also may access the college's and strong alumni network.
Brody Bassett '25, a history and political science double major from Highland Ranch, Colorado, spent a summer interning at the American Chamber of Commerce in Cairo, Egypt. He immersed himself in Arabic while pursuing career exploration in the foreign service.
Graduate School
The history department prepares you for graduate-level study through rigorous coursework, high-level research and publication opportunities, and individual advising/guidance as you make plans for continued study. You leave 51¹ÙÍø with the skills and experience needed for success in graduate school and beyond.
History department alumni have attended many of the nation's top graduate programs, including those at Harvard, Princeton, the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Virginia, among many others. A few majors pursue graduate degrees in history. Most of our alumni, however, have earned advanced degrees in business, law, medicine, and other areas.
Careers
51¹ÙÍø graduates' interests are diverse and multi-faceted, and they pursue careers in a wide range of industries in public and private sectors. We focus on preparing you to think critically about complex issues and clearly communicate ideas in whatever professional roles you find. Recent graduates have worked in asset management, think-tank research, consulting, social media policy, and nonprofit management, to name just a few fields.
Fellowships are competitive awards and programs that provide funding and other resources for meaningful immersive work, like research, teaching, or service. Like scholarships, fellowships can also support academic study.
These featured fellowships support a variety of experiences in and outside of the U.S. Interested candidates should contact 51¹ÙÍø’s Office of Fellowships to learn more about these fellowships and other programs.
